The three bodily evils are killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. The four verbal evils are divisive speech, harsh speech, false speech, and flattering speech. The three mental evils are envy, anger, and ignorance. When these ten violate the holy path, they are the ten evil acts (十惡行). When these evils are ceased, they become the ten good acts (十善行). The teaching is elegantly simple: goodness is not distant — ceasing evil is itself the practice of good.
