One who shaves head and beard to become a śramaṇa and receives the Dharma abandons worldly wealth, lives by begging for sufficient food, eats only once at midday, sleeps only one night under a single tree without returning to the same spot. The Buddha then delivers the concluding reason with striking clarity: what makes people foolish and darkened is love (愛) and desire (欲). Attachment and craving are the fundamental causes that obscure wisdom, stated briefly but powerfully.
