Fó gào Xū pútí: Yú yì yún hé? Rúlái xī zài Rándēng Fó suǒ, yú fǎ yǒu suǒ dé fǒu? Bù yě, Shì zūn. Rúlái zài Rándēng Fó suǒ, yú fǎ shí wú suǒ dé. Xū pútí, yú yì yún hé? Púsà zhuāngyán Fótǔ fǒu? Bù yě, Shì zūn. Hé yǐ gù? Zhuāngyán Fótǔ zhě, zé fēi zhuāngyán, shì míng zhuāngyán. Shì gù Xū pútí, zhū púsà mōhēsà yīng rúshì shēng qīngjìng xīn: bù yīng zhù sè shēng xīn, bù yīng zhù shēng xiāng wèi chù fǎ shēng xīn, yīng wú suǒ zhù ér shēng qí xīn. Xū pútí, pì rú yǒu rén shēn rú Xūmí shān wáng, yú yì yún hé? Shì shēn wéi dà fǒu? Xū pútí yán: Shèn dà, Shì zūn. Hé yǐ gù? Fó shuō fēi shēn, shì míng dà shēn.

Key Message

Give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere (應無所住而生其心). To use the mind freely without clinging to any object is the essence of genuine practice.

Section 10 elicits from Subhuti the answer that the Tathāgata, while training under Dīpaṃkara Buddha in a past life, attained 'in truth no dharma whatsoever.

Section 10 elicits from Subhuti the answer that the Tathāgata, while training under Dīpaṃkara Buddha in a past life, attained 'in truth no dharma whatsoever.' When the Buddha then asks whether a bodhisattva adorns the Buddha-land, the reply is: 'Adorning the Buddha-land is not in reality adorning; it is called adorning.' The key passage is the diamond utterance: 'One should give rise to the mind without dwelling anywhere' (應無所住而生其心) — do not let the mind dwell on form, do not let it dwell on sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharmas; give rise to the mind while dwelling nowhere at all. This sentence became the occasion for the great awakening of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng of the Chan school.
