Key Message

Just as a single light illuminates the entire universe simultaneously, a single truth manifests wholly and simultaneously in every being.

Chapter 9 of the Avatamsaka Sutra, 'The Chapter of Illumination' (光明覺品), depicts the scene in which a hundred billion rays of light stream forth from the wheel-marks beneath the Buddha's feet (兩足輪), illuminating the entire trichiliocosm.

This radiance pervades a hundred billion Jambudvīpas (the human world), a hundred billion oceans, and a hundred billion Mount Sumerus, reaching to all the celestial realms. More remarkably, in each Jambudvīpa the Tathāgata is simultaneously seen seated upon a lotus throne, and in each world bodhisattvas — empowered by the Buddha's spiritual might — simultaneously proclaim the Dharma. This passage visually discloses the Avatamsaka's core worldview. Just as a single light is reflected infinitely, illuminating each of countless worlds simultaneously, a single truth manifests wholly and simultaneously within every being in the entire universe — the principle of 'one in all' (一卽多).
