Key Message

The Buddha's enlightenment is not merely an inner event — it is a cosmic event that fills the entire universe with light and adornment.

The first chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra, 'The Wondrous Adornments of World Rulers' (世主妙嚴品), describes the magnificent scene immediately following the Buddha's attainment of perfect enlightenment (正覺) beneath the Bodhi tree.

The first chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra, 'The Wondrous Adornments of World Rulers' (世主妙嚴品), describes the magnificent scene immediately following the Buddha's attainment of perfect enlightenment (正覺) beneath the Bodhi tree. The setting is the bodhi-manda — the place of awakening — in the Magadha region, a land of diamond-hard ground adorned with precious wheels, jeweled flowers, and pure mani-gems. From banner-poles fashioned of mani-jewels, endless radiance streams forth and wondrous sounds flow ceaselessly; jeweled nets and fragrant garlands hang in all directions; the king of mani-jewels manifests freely, raining inexhaustible treasures and flowers that scatter across the ground; rows of jeweled trees spread their brilliantly luminous branches and leaves. All this adornment, declares the text, manifests through the Buddha's spiritual power (佛神力). The cosmic splendor depicted here is not mere physical beauty — it is the profound truth that the wisdom of enlightenment itself illuminates and adorns the entire phenomenal world. The whole universe is transformed into a living Dharma-hall celebrating the Buddha's awakening.
