시편 Chapter 115

Translation: ESV

1

Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

Key Message

True worship is not seeking one's own honor but desiring only God's name to receive glory.

Israel refuses for glory to come to themselves and seeks only for God's name to receive glory.

Israel refuses for glory to come to themselves and seeks only for God's name to receive glory. 'Not to us' is repeated twice before 'but to your name' is emphasized. This is the biblical declaration of soli Deo gloria (glory to God alone).

4

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands.

Key Message

Idols are made by human hands and therefore inferior to humans; worshiping creatures is a fundamental error.

The critique of idols begins.

5

They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see.

Key Message

Idols that appear to have sense organs can actually do nothing; worshiping them is a futile thing.

This is a paradoxical description showing that although idols appear to have sense organs, they actually perform no function.

9

O Israel, trust in the LORD! He is their help and their shield.

Key Message

One who has realized the futility of idols relies only on the true God; he is the true help and shield.

After exposing the futility of idols, the command to trust the true God comes.

16

The heavens are the LORD's heavens, but the earth he has given to the children of man.

Key Message

God has entrusted the earth to humans, and humans as God's stewards have the responsibility to care for it.

The heavens are God's dwelling, and the earth is what has been entrusted to human beings.
