고린도전서 Chapter 10

Translation: ESV

1

For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,

Key Message

Even the privilege of having received God's grace can become the cause of failure if accompanied by arrogance. Israel's experience stands as a warning.

Israel's wilderness experience becomes a warning lesson for the Corinthian believers.

Israel's wilderness experience becomes a warning lesson for the Corinthian believers. Israel's passing through the sea with Moses and eating the manna and drinking water from the rock (vv. 1–4) prefigure the Christian sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper. Yet those who received such privileges fell in the wilderness because of sin.

12

Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.

Key Message

The arrogance of thinking that one stands firmly is the most dangerous posture; humble vigilance is the foundation of safety.

This is the lesson drawn from Israel's failure.

13

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Key Message

God is faithful and will not allow us to face temptation beyond our strength, and with every temptation he prepares a way of escape.

This is one of the most comforting verses regarding temptation.

31

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Key Message

Every aspect of daily life must be for God's glory; the key is not the distinction between sacred and secular actions but the motivation and purpose behind them.

This is the principle that concludes the discussion of food offered to idols in chapters 8–10.
