민수기 Chapter 25

Translation: ESV

1

While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab.

Key Message

When external threats fail, internal corruption threatens God's people. The true danger to the community of faith comes not from outside but from compromise within.

When the external curse (Balaam) failed, now it is internal moral corruption that threatens Israel.

When the external curse (Balaam) failed, now it is internal moral corruption that threatens Israel. The sexual immorality with the Moabite women was not merely sexual promiscuity but led to worship of their god Baal of Peor. What an external enemy could not accomplish, internal corruption achieved. This is later revealed to have been Balaam's strategy (Numbers 31:16, Revelation 2:14).

11

"Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy."

Key Message

Zeal for God's holiness does not tolerate compromise and corruption; a holy passion to protect God's covenant community can turn back judgment.

Phinehas's violent act of thrusting a spear through the Israelite man and the Midianite woman who were engaging in immorality turns back God's anger.
