This verse has been used as a traditional opening prayer in Jewish worship. It is the view of an outsider, a foreigner, looking at how beautiful the community of God's people is.

I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth.

Key Message

Even from the mouth of a foreign prophet a messianic prophecy can come; God's plan of redemption is proclaimed breaking through all human resistance.
