The LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying,

Key Message

God's revelation is comprehensive, encompassing not only worship regulations but the structure of economic and social life as well.

Leviticus 25 contains regulations concerning the Sabbath year and the Year of Jubilee.

Leviticus 25 contains regulations concerning the Sabbath year and the Year of Jubilee. The explicit statement that these regulations were given 'on Mount Sinai' emphasizes that these economic and social ordinances were directly revealed on God's mountain. Regulations about land and freedom are also part of God's covenant.

3

For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its fruits,

Key Message

The land also needs rest; this is an expression of faith acknowledging that all creation belongs to God.

This is the first part of the Sabbath year regulations.

4

but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the LORD. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard.

Key Message

The Sabbath year is a faith act acknowledging God's sovereignty; disobedience brings God's judgment.

The seventh year is 'a Sabbath to the LORD.

10

And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when each of you shall return to his property and each of you shall return to his clan.

Key Message

The Year of Jubilee demonstrates the socioeconomic principles of God's kingdom; Jesus proclaimed a spiritual jubilee.

The Year of Jubilee (Yovel) is the heart of Leviticus 25.

11

That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; in it you shall neither sow nor reap what grows of itself nor gather the grapes from the undressed vines.

Key Message

The economic cessation of the Jubilee is an act of faith trusting in God's provision.

Cultivation also ceases in the Jubilee, as in the Sabbath year.

23

"The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine. For you are strangers and sojourners with me.

Key Message

The land and all property belong to God; we are stewards who manage them on his behalf.

This is the theological basis of the Jubilee land law.

35

"If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you.

Key Message

Helping community members in economic difficulty is the obligation of the covenant community.

Even within the Jubilee economic system, a brother in temporary difficulty must be helped.

42

For they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as slaves.

Key Message

Those who belong to God cannot be permanently enslaved by any human or power.

The reason why Israelites could not be sold as permanent slaves is stated: they are God's servants.

55

For it is to me that the people of Israel are servants. They are my servants whom I brought out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

Key Message

We are free because we belong to God, and this freedom becomes the basis for sacrificial service to neighbors.

This is the conclusion of Leviticus 25.
