The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

God's holiness must be respected both in the place of worship (the tabernacle) and in everyday social life.

"Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil from beaten olives for the lamp, that a light may be kept burning regularly.

Key Message

The light of God's presence must burn brightly without ceasing; the church and believers must shine that light into the world.

The tabernacle lamp could only be fueled by pure olive oil.

"You shall take fine flour and bake twelve loaves from it; two tenths of an ephah shall be in each loaf.

Key Message

The bread always before God foreshadows Jesus Christ, the bread of life; the church is always in his presence.

The twelve loaves of the bread of the Presence (showbread) symbolize the twelve tribes of Israel.

Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death.

Key Message

God's name is sacred, and blaspheming it is a grave sin that denies the very existence of God.

Blasphemy is a capital crime.

If anyone injures his neighbor, as he has done it shall be done to him,

Key Message

The lex talionis established proportional justice by limiting unlimited revenge; Jesus went beyond this to teach forgiveness and love of enemies.

The lex talionis (law of retaliation): the principle of 'eye for eye, tooth for tooth.

You shall have the same rule for the sojourner and for the native, for I am the LORD your God."

Key Message

God's law applies equally to all people; this is the foundation of true justice.

The equal application of the law is emphasized.
