요한복음 Chapter 10

Translation: ESV

7

So Jesus again said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.'

Key Message

Jesus is the door of the sheep; only through him can one access salvation and abundant life.

This is the third 'I am (egō eimi)' declaration.

This is the third 'I am (egō eimi)' declaration. 'I am the door of the sheep (ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ θύρα τῶν προβάτων)' declares the exclusivity of access. Just as the door is the only legitimate passageway for sheep entering the fold, Jesus is the only door for entering into a relationship with God. This is made concrete in verse 9: 'If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.'

10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Key Message

Jesus came not to steal like a thief but to give the sheep abundant life.

The purposes of the thief and Jesus are sharply contrasted.

11

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

Key Message

Jesus the good shepherd voluntarily lays down his life for the sheep; he is the good shepherd that God promised through Ezekiel.

This is the fourth 'I am (egō eimi)' declaration.

16

And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

Key Message

Jesus' ministry as the good shepherd aims at universal salvation that gathers all nations, beyond Jews alone, into one flock.

'Other sheep that are not of this fold' refers to Gentiles.

27

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

Key Message

The true disciple is characterized by hearing Jesus' voice, dwelling in his knowing, and following him.

Three characteristics of a true disciple relationship are presented: hearing Jesus' voice, being known by Jesus, and following Jesus.

30

I and the Father are one.

Key Message

The Son and Father are distinct persons but are one in essence; this is the core of Trinitarian faith.

This is the most explicit Trinitarian declaration in John's Gospel.
