So the sisters sent to him, saying, 'Lord, he whom you love is ill.'

But when Jesus heard it he said, 'This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.'

God's glory is displayed even more greatly after passing through suffering and death; the ultimate purpose of this event is not death but the glory of God.

Jesus says that Lazarus' illness 'does not lead to death,' yet Lazarus actually dies.

He calls Lazarus 'with a loud voice (φωνῇ μεγάλῃ).

The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, and let him go.'

Key Message

It is the mission of the church to unbind and set free those whom Jesus has raised.

Lazarus comes out still wrapped in grave clothes.
