요한복음 Chapter 14

Translation: ESV

1

Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.

Key Message

The answer to anxiety and fear is not suppression but trust in God and Jesus Christ.

The farewell discourse begins in earnest.

The farewell discourse begins in earnest. The disciples were wrapped in anxiety over Jesus' departure and the foretelling of Peter's denial. 'Let not be troubled (μὴ ταρασσέσθω, mē tarassesthō)' is a strong imperative. Anxiety is an emotional response, but Jesus commands its overcoming. The basis is faith: 'Believe in God; believe also in me.' Faith in Jesus is the foundation for overcoming anxiety.

2

In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

Key Message

Jesus' departure is in order to prepare an eternal dwelling for believers, and in that house there is a place for every believer.

'My Father's house' is a place full of God's presence.

6

Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'

Key Message

Jesus is the only way to God, the complete truth of God's revelation, and the life of God itself.

This is the sixth 'I am (egō eimi)' declaration and the most comprehensive.

12

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

Key Message

After Jesus goes to the Father, the disciples will perform a more widespread ministry through the Spirit.

'Greater works than these will he do' is an astonishing declaration.

16

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,

Key Message

The Spirit is another Helper of the same nature as Jesus, who will be with all believers forever.

In 'another Helper (ἄλλον παράκλητον, allon paraklēton),' 'another' (ἄλλος, allos) means another of the same kind.

27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Key Message

The peace Jesus gives is something the world cannot give — a deep inner peace that does not waver even in the midst of storms.

Jesus' 'shalom (peace)' is different from the world's peace.
