Key Message

Rightly contemplating the impermanence of heaven, earth, and world, and observing one's own luminous awareness — this is awakening itself.

The Buddha presents three methods of contemplation.

The Buddha presents three methods of contemplation. Contemplate heaven and earth, and reflect on their impermanence. Contemplate the world, and reflect on its impermanence. Contemplate the luminous awareness (靈覺), and that is itself bodhi (菩提, awakening). To know and realize this is to attain the Way swiftly. This brief instruction teaches that the observation of impermanence leads directly to awakening.
