Volume Ten, the grand finale of the Śūraṃgama Sūtra, explains the 'twelve classes of beings' (十二類生) — the twelve types of life forms cycling through saṃsāra. Egg-born, womb-born, moisture-born, transformation-born, with form, without form, with thought, without thought, neither with nor without thought, having form with āsravas, having form without āsravas, and without āsravas — all twelve modes of existence are shown to arise from 'luminous awareness' (覺明): from the originally luminous awakening, deluded perception (妄見) arises in a distorted way, and from that, mountains, rivers, the great earth, and cyclic existence are formed. This explanation is simultaneously a cosmology and a soteriology — showing that the root of all cyclic existence lies in deluded attachment, and that seeing this root of attachment is the beginning of liberation.
