Section 30 is a philosophical tour de force that simultaneously deconstructs both atomism and holism. The Buddha asks: if a person were to reduce the three-thousand-great-thousandfold world to the finest particles of dust, would that multitude of particles be many? Subhūti confirms: immensely many. But the Buddha immediately applies the deconstruction: 'If the multitude of particles were real, the Buddha would not speak of a multitude of particles — it is in truth not a multitude of particles, it is only called a multitude of particles.' Similarly, the world is in truth not the world — it is only called the world. Why? Because if the world were real, it would be a 'one-integrated-whole-mark' (一合相, yīhé xiāng). But that concept too is deconstructed: 'The one-integrated-whole-mark is in truth not a one-integrated-whole-mark — it is only called a one-integrated-whole-mark.' The yīhé xiāng cannot even be expressed; it is only ordinary beings who cling to it as a thing. The teaching moves through both directions of analysis — the reductionist path (breaking everything into atoms) and the synthetic path (grasping everything as a unified whole) — and shows that neither route arrives at a fixed reality.
