시편 Chapter 90

Translation: ESV

1

Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.

Key Message

In a changing world, God alone is the eternal and unchanging dwelling place.

This is the prayer of Moses, the beginning of Book IV of the Psalms (Psalms 90-106) and one of the oldest psalms in the Bible.

This is the prayer of Moses, the beginning of Book IV of the Psalms (Psalms 90-106) and one of the oldest psalms in the Bible. 'Dwelling place (ma'on)' — home, abode, habitation. Even as the world changes and humans die, God remains as the unchanging dwelling place for all generations.

2

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Key Message

God's existence transcends creation and time, continuing from everlasting to everlasting.

God's eternity existing before creation is declared.

4

For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.

Key Message

To God a thousand years is like a day — human concepts of time cannot measure God's time.

God's sense of time is entirely different from humans'.

9

For all our days pass away under your wrath; we bring our years to an end like a sigh.

Key Message

Recognizing how short and fragile human life is before God's holiness is the beginning of wisdom.

The finite life of human beings living under death because of sin is reflected upon.

10

The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.

Key Message

A life of 70-80 years is full of toil and trouble and passes in an instant — this recognition turns us toward God.

This is the Bible's most famous statement about human lifespan.

12

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.

Key Message

True wisdom is born when one recognizes and counts the finiteness of one's days.

This is the core prayer of Psalm 90 and its most famous verse.

14

Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

Key Message

When the brief life is filled each morning with God's steadfast love, a whole lifetime becomes joy.

This is a prayer offered after recognizing the finitude of life.

17

Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!

Key Message

When God's favor comes upon it, seemingly transient human toil takes on eternal meaning and stability.

This is the final prayer of Psalm 90.
