Key Message

Generosity overcomes stinginess and goodness overcomes evil; receive the Dhamma's teachings mindfully and draw out all that is good, as one draws water from a deep spring with a vessel.

The Pakiṇṇakavagga (Chapter of Miscellany) gathers a diverse collection of practical teachings, synthesizing many of the ethical virtues discussed in earlier chapters.

The Pakiṇṇakavagga (Chapter of Miscellany) gathers a diverse collection of practical teachings, synthesizing many of the ethical virtues discussed in earlier chapters. Generosity overcomes stinginess; goodness overcomes all evil; giving leads to blessing; patience leads to endurance. If one hears a wise person set forth a verse of the Dhamma, one should mindfully receive and hold it, practice it, and then proclaim it to others. This creates a chain of Dhamma transmission from teacher to student to the world. The closing image is one of the Dhammapada's most beautiful: just as one who enters a deep spring draws out water with a vessel, so should wisdom be employed to draw out all that is good — gathering excellence wherever it is found.
