Key Message

Sexual misconduct is the absence of compassion. A bodhisattva delivers beings through the pure Dharma, not through desire that causes harm.

The Precept Against Sexual Misconduct (不淫欲戒) is the third major precept, forbidding all forms of illicit sexual conduct.

The Precept Against Sexual Misconduct (不淫欲戒) is the third major precept, forbidding all forms of illicit sexual conduct. It includes engaging in sexual misconduct oneself, inducing others to do so, and all forms of improper relations — with animals, spirits, or any being in a manner contrary to the proper way (非道行淫). It explicitly prohibits sexual relations with the six close blood-relatives (六親). A bodhisattva must instead arouse a heart of filial reverence, delivering all sentient beings through the pure Dharma. Sexual misconduct signifies a complete absence of compassion and is therefore a pārājika offense. For lay bodhisattvas, this precept applies to sexual relations outside the marriage bond; for monastic bodhisattvas, it requires complete celibacy (梵行).
