Chapter 40, 'The Vows of Samantabhadra' (普賢行願品), sets forth the ten great vows (十大行願) of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, forming the grand conclusion that brings the pilgrim's journey of the 'Entering the Dharmadhātu' chapter to its completion. The ten great vows are: 1) Venerating all Buddhas (禮敬諸佛), 2) Praising the Tathāgata (稱讚如來), 3) Offering extensively (廣修供養), 4) Repenting of karmic obstructions (懺悔業障), 5) Rejoicing in merit (隨喜功德), 6) Requesting the turning of the Dharma-wheel (請轉法輪), 7) Requesting the Buddha to remain in the world (請佛住世), 8) Always following the Buddha's example (常隨佛學), 9) Always according with sentient beings (恒順衆生), and 10) Dedicating all merits universally (普皆廻向). The passage quoted is the first vow, 'Venerating All Buddhas.' Samantabhadra vows to pay homage to all Buddhas throughout the entire Dharmadhātu and realm of empty space — an act of veneration performed with pure body, speech, and mind (身語意業) that is without end because space itself is inexhaustible. In this paradox where a finite self encounters the infinite Dharmadhātu, the essence of Avatamsaka devotional practice is revealed.
