The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!

This is the fifth enthronement praise psalm. Here the response to God's rule is not 'joy' but 'trembling (yirgazu).' Before the holy majesty of God, the peoples tremble and the earth quakes. 'He sits enthroned upon the cherubim' — the cherubim above the ark of the covenant are a symbol of God's presence.

Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!

Key Message

God's great and awesome name is worthy of praise, and the essence of that name is holiness.

This is the first refrain — 'Holy is he (kadosh hu).

Exalt the LORD our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!

Key Message

God's holiness must be responded to with worship, and bowing at his footstool is the right posture.

This is the second refrain.

Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the LORD our God is holy!

The 'Holy is he' proclaimed three times — this essential attribute of God is the deepest basis for worship.
