In you, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me!

Psalm 31 is a personal petition psalm — the psalm from which Jesus quoted verse 5 ('Into your hand I commit my spirit') as his final breath on the cross.

Psalm 31 is a personal petition psalm — the psalm from which Jesus quoted verse 5 ('Into your hand I commit my spirit') as his final breath on the cross. 'In you I take refuge (vakh hasiti)' is an active confession of faith, having already made God one's refuge. 'Let me never be put to shame' is a prayer that trust in God not be in vain — seeking that God's faithfulness be demonstrated.

5

Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God.

Key Message

Committing one's life into God's hands is the ultimate expression of faith, and Jesus fully realized this faith on the cross.

Jesus's last words on the cross (Luke 23:46) quoted this verse.

15

My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!

Key Message

The faith that all times of my life are in God's hand enables overcoming fear of enemies — this is the faith of providence.

'My times (ittai)' — all the times of my life, my destiny — being in God's hand is a declaration that the sovereignty of time and history belongs to God.
