Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, from the clans of Manasseh the son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

God listens carefully to just requests; when social customs obstruct justice, God establishes justice through new regulations.

The daughters of Zelophehad come before Moses to claim their rights.

Zelophehad died without sons, and his daughters request an inheritance so that their father's name would not disappear from his tribe. Moses does not handle this unprecedented request on his own judgment but brings it before God.

"The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father's brothers and transfer the inheritance of their father to them."

God recognizes just rights regardless of gender and listens to the legitimate demands of the socially vulnerable.

God declares that the request of Zelophehad's daughters is 'right.

So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him."

Key Message

God appoints those who are filled with the Spirit as leaders; leaders are validated not by human ability but by God's Spirit.

Joshua is appointed as Moses's successor.
