요한복음 Chapter 6

Translation: ESV

1

After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.

Key Message

Jesus' feeding of the five thousand was not a mere miracle but a sign to reveal himself as the bread of life.

Chapter 6 is set on the Sea of Galilee (the Sea of Tiberias).

Chapter 6 is set on the Sea of Galilee (the Sea of Tiberias). Tiberias was a city built by Herod Antipas, named after the Roman Emperor Tiberius. In this chapter, one of the key signs in John's Gospel unfolds — the feeding of the five thousand — and on that basis the 'bread of life' discourse is presented. Galilee was the main stage for Jesus' public ministry.

11

Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.

Key Message

Jesus' miracle of feeding the five thousand was a sign proclaiming that he is the bread of life.

Jesus' actions correspond to the language of the Eucharist: 'taking the loaves, giving thanks, and distributing them.

35

Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.'

Key Message

Jesus is the bread of life; those who come to him will never experience eternal hunger and thirst.

This is the first of John's Gospel's seven 'I am (egō eimi)' declarations.

44

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

Key Message

Coming to faith is impossible without God the Father's drawing, and that grace is the source of our faith.

The sovereign nature of salvation is declared.

51

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.

Key Message

Jesus is the living bread who gives his flesh for the life of the world.

The expression 'my flesh (σάρξ, sarx)' refers to the incarnation while simultaneously referring to the Eucharist.

68

Simon Peter answered him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,'

Key Message

True faith is the decision to remain with Jesus not because one has understood everything, but because one knows there is nowhere else to go.

After many disciples have left, this is Peter's great confession of faith.
