Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.

When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, 'Do you want to be healed?'

Jesus asks us, 'Do you want to be healed?', awakening our will and hope for a new life.

'Do you want to be healed (Θέλεις ὑγιὴς γενέσθαι;)?' appears to be an obvious question on the surface, but carries deep meaning.

Jesus said to him, 'Get up, take up your bed, and walk.'

Jesus' words have creative power, so that the command is itself the fulfillment of healing.

Jesus' healing command is concise and powerful.

But Jesus answered them, 'My Father is working until now, and I am working.'

Jesus does life-giving work on the Sabbath with the same divine authority as the Father.

This is Jesus' response to the Sabbath controversy.

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

Those who believe in Jesus have already passed from death to life and possess eternal life at this very moment.

This verse is one of the clearest expressions of soteriology in John's Gospel.

All Scripture points to Jesus Christ, and studying Scripture while rejecting Christ is missing the purpose of Scripture.
