요한복음 Chapter 18

Translation: ESV

4

Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, 'Whom do you seek?'

Key Message

Jesus' arrest was not compulsion but voluntary self-offering; he knew everything that would happen to him and came forward.

'Knowing all that would happen to him' emphasizes that Jesus came forward not to flee the arrest but actively.

'Knowing all that would happen to him' emphasizes that Jesus came forward not to flee the arrest but actively. 'Whom do you seek?' is not a passive surrender but Jesus' proactive self-offering. This is consistent with the good shepherd who 'lays down' his life for the sheep (10:11, the word tithēmi, 'to lay down'). Jesus' arrest is not compulsion but voluntary obedience.

5

They answered him, 'Jesus of Nazareth.' Jesus said to them, 'I am he.' Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.

Key Message

Jesus revealed himself and yet did not escape through his power, demonstrating the ultimate sacrifice of voluntarily handing himself over.

'I am he (ἐγώ εἰμι, egō eimi)' in this context simply means 'I am that person,' but at the same time functions as God's self-revealing name.

11

So Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?'

Key Message

Jesus demonstrated complete obedience by willingly accepting the cup of suffering given by the Father.

When Peter draws his sword, Jesus immediately stops him.

36

Jesus answered, 'My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.'

Key Message

Jesus' kingdom is on a different level from worldly political power and is built not by military force but by truth and love.

Before Pilate, Jesus declares the nature of his kingdom.
