창세기 Chapter 50

Translation: ESV

1

Then Joseph fell on his father's face and wept over him and kissed him.

Key Message

Faith does not deny grief; grieving honestly before God is both a human and a faithful response.

When Jacob dies, Joseph falls on his father's face, weeps over him, and kisses him.

When Jacob dies, Joseph falls on his father's face, weeps over him, and kisses him. This scene expresses the most honest human grief. It shows that believing in God does not eliminate sorrow before death, but allows one to hold hope even within that sorrow.

13

His sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place.

Key Message

Being buried in the promised land is the ultimate confession of faith in resurrection and in God's promises, and the community of faith is one even in death.

Jacob is buried at the cave of Machpelah in Canaan.

19

But Joseph said to them, 'Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?'

Key Message

Genuine forgiveness is completed in entrusting judgment to God and in the humility of not taking God's place.

After Jacob's death, the brothers fear Joseph's revenge.

20

As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

Key Message

God uses even humanity's evil intentions for His good purposes, and this is the manner in which God's providence operates in history and in life.

This is the theological climax and conclusion of the entire book of Genesis.

24

And Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am about to die, but God will visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.'

Key Message

Confessing faith in God's promise even in the face of death is the final testimony of a person of faith.

Joseph's last words are not about his own death but about God's promise.

26

And Joseph died, being 110 years old. They embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

Key Message

Genesis ends with an open ending pointing toward the promise, and the journey of faith does not end with one generation but continues toward God's greater salvation.

Genesis ends with Joseph's death and his placement in a coffin.
