The altar of burnt offering is the largest piece of furniture in the tabernacle court and the first thing Israel encounters when entering the tabernacle. The sacrifice offered at the altar is for atonement of sin, teaching that atonement must take place first before drawing near to God. This prefigures Christ's sacrifice on the cross.
