佛言 從愛生憂 從憂生怖 若離於愛 何憂何怖
fó yán cóng ài shēng yōu cóng yōu shēng bù ruò lí yú ài hé yōu hé bù
▸From love (愛) arises sorrow (憂); from sorrow arises fear (怖).
From love (愛) arises sorrow (憂); from sorrow arises fear (怖). If one is freed from love, what sorrow can there be? What fear? In just two lines, this teaching perfectly expresses the chain linking attachment to suffering. The sequence runs in reverse as well: freedom from attachment dissolves both sorrow and fear simultaneously.
