Key Message

Knowing much and hearing much does not protect the mind. True protection begins only when one directly sees the nature of the mind.

The full title of the Śūraṃgama Sūtra is 'Dàfódǐng Rúlái Mìyīn Xiūzhèng Liǎoyì Zhū Púsà Wànxíng Shǒuléngyán Jīng' (大佛頂如來密因修證了義諸菩薩萬行首楞嚴經), a Mahāyāna scripture translated during the Tang dynasty by Pāramiti (般剌蜜帝) in 705 CE.

The full title of the Śūraṃgama Sūtra is 'Dàfódǐng Rúlái Mìyīn Xiūzhèng Liǎoyì Zhū Púsà Wànxíng Shǒuléngyán Jīng' (大佛頂如來密因修證了義諸菩薩萬行首楞嚴經), a Mahāyāna scripture translated during the Tang dynasty by Pāramiti (般剌蜜帝) in 705 CE. Volume One opens with the incident in which the Venerable Ānanda, the Buddha's cousin, becomes ensnared by the enchantments of a woman named Mātaṅgī (摩登伽) and is on the verge of breaking his precepts. Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva hastens to Ānanda's aid bearing the Śūraṃgama dhāraṇī, rescues him, and brings him before the Buddha. Prompted by this dramatic incident, the Buddha begins his teaching by posing the foundational question to Ānanda: 'Where is the mind?' (心在何處). Ānanda points to seven locations one after another (the seven investigations of the mind), but the Buddha refutes each in turn. This 'investigation of the mind's location' is not merely a philosophical exercise — it is the prelude to a fundamental inquiry toward the true mind, the Tathāgatagarbha (如來藏).
