The teaching on the Three Bodies of Buddha in Self-Nature (自性三身佛) presents Huineng's interpretation of the trikāya doctrine — the three bodies of a Buddha — in terms of self-nature. The Three Buddha-bodies are: the Pure Dharma-body Buddha (清淨法身佛), the Complete Recompense-body Buddha (圓滿報身佛), and the Hundred-billion Transformation-body Buddha (百千億化身佛). Huineng declares that all three are not found outside but within one's own mind. The nature of sentient beings is inherently pure, just as the sky is always clear — but illusory thoughts (妄念, wàng niàn) cover self-nature the way clouds obscure the sun and moon. When the wind disperses the clouds, light fills everything above and below. Wisdom (智, zhì) is like the sun; discernment (慧, huì) is like the moon — always shining, but veiled by the floating clouds of attachment to external conditions. When the true Dharma is heard and delusion is cleared away, inside and outside become luminous and all phenomena manifest within self-nature.
