The Chapter on the Encouragement of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva (Puxian Pusa Quanfa Pin, 普賢菩薩勸發品) is the twenty-eighth and final chapter of the Lotus Sutra. Samantabhadra Bodhisattva (普賢菩薩) arrives from the east accompanied by an immeasurable host of great bodhisattvas, traversing lands that quake at his passage while jeweled lotus blossoms rain down and celestial music fills the air. Arriving at Vulture Peak (Gridhrakuta) in the saha world, he bows in reverence before Shakyamuni Buddha, circumambulates seven times to the right, and asks: 'After the Tathagata's extinction, how can good men and women obtain this Lotus Sutra?' The Buddha replies that those who accomplish four things will receive this sutra in the age after the Tathagata's parinirvana: first, to be protected and held in mind by all Buddhas (honian, 護念); second, to plant the roots of virtue (deben, 德本); third, to enter the assembly of right determination (zhengdingjü, 正定聚); and fourth, to arouse the mind to save all sentient beings. Samantabhadra vows to protect all who practice the Lotus Sutra. This chapter serves as both the doctrinal conclusion and the practical culmination of the entire Lotus Sutra, urging all who have heard and understood the dharma to embody it in life and transmit it to others.
