Key Message

The Kṣitigarbha Sūtra's detailed enumeration of hell names is not to generate fear but to make the law of karma concrete, so that beings will turn away from evil deeds and take refuge in Kṣitigarbha's liberating vows.

The Chapter on the Names of the Hells begins with Bodhisattva Samantabhadra asking Kṣitigarbha to explain the names of the hells and their retributions.

The Chapter on the Names of the Hells begins with Bodhisattva Samantabhadra asking Kṣitigarbha to explain the names of the hells and their retributions. Kṣitigarbha describes numerous hells, beginning with the Iron Ring Mountains (鐵圍山) to the east of Jambudvīpa: the great hell called Jí Wú Jiān (Extreme Uninterrupted), the great Avīci (大阿鼻), and hells named the Four Corners, the Flying Knives, the Fire Arrows, the Crushing Mountains, the Piercing Spears, the Iron Carts, the Iron Beds, the Iron Oxen, the Iron Garments, the Thousand Blades, and the Iron Donkeys. The purpose of this chapter is not to generate fear but to lead beings of the degenerate age (末法, mò fǎ) to know the specific consequences of karma, to distance themselves from evil deeds, and to rely on the liberating vows of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva.
