The Chapter on the Gathering of Emanation Bodies is one of the most magnificent and moving scenes in the entire Kṣitigarbha Sūtra. All the emanation bodies (分身, fēn shēn) of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva that had been dispatched to every hell in every incalculable world all gather together in Trāyastriṃśa Heaven. The emanation bodies of Kṣitigarbha are accompanied by beings from every realm who have received his teaching and been liberated: from the deva realm, the dragon realm, the realm of spirits, the hell realm, the animal realm, the hungry ghost realm, the asura realm, and the human realm. All of them have, through Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva's vast compassion and profound vows, been delivered from wandering through birth and death across the six realms for countless kalpas without rest, and have each attained their fruit and reached the stage of non-regression (不退轉). This chapter declares that Kṣitigarbha is not a bodhisattva concerned only with the hells but a being of boundless compassion who traverses every world and every realm of beings.
