Section 32 is the magnificent conclusion of the Diamond Sutra, containing one of the most beautiful and widely memorized verses in the history of Buddhist literature. The sutra opens its final movement with one last comparison of material generosity and dharma-generosity, confirming that upholding and expounding even a four-line verse surpasses the merit of filling boundless worlds with treasures. Instructions follow for how to expound the teaching to others: 'Not grasping at marks, unwavering in suchness (如如不動, rúrú bùdòng).' Then the sutra offers its consummate statement — the six-part verse on the nature of all conditioned phenomena: 'All conditioned dharmas are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow; like dew and also like lightning. One should contemplate them thus (應作如是觀).' These six images — dream (mèng 夢), illusion (huàn 幻), bubble (pào 泡), shadow (yǐng 影), dew (lù 露), and lightning (diàn 電) — each captures a different facet of impermanence and the absence of fixed existence. The sutra closes as it opened — in community. The elder Subhūti, the monks and nuns, the laymen and laywomen, and all the gods, humans, and asuras who heard the Buddha's teaching were filled with great joy and received and practiced it in faith.
