Key Message

The small suffering of present contempt dissolves great past transgressions. The merit of Diamond Sutra practice is inconceivable.

Section 16 carries the practical teaching of purifying karmic obstacles (業障).

Section 16 carries the practical teaching of purifying karmic obstacles (業障). If a person who receives, retains, reads, and recites this sutra is treated with contempt and ridicule by others, this is understood as past-life karmic transgressions that should have resulted in rebirth in an evil realm now being dissolved by the small suffering of present-life contempt, so that the person will attain supreme enlightenment. The Buddha recalls that across immeasurable asaṃkhyeya-kalpas in the past, before the time of Dīpaṃkara Buddha, he made offerings to eight hundred four thousand million nayuta Buddhas without missing a single one. Yet the merit of receiving and retaining this sutra in the latter age surpasses all those offerings to such an extent that even one-hundredth, one ten-millionth, no number or simile could express the comparison.
