Key Message

Heedfulness is the path to the deathless; heedlessness is the path to death. The heedless person, though alive in body, is already as good as dead.

The Appamādavagga (Chapter on Heedfulness) extols the virtue of appamāda — the Pali term for diligent, unwavering mindfulness and watchfulness.

The Appamādavagga (Chapter on Heedfulness) extols the virtue of appamāda — the Pali term for diligent, unwavering mindfulness and watchfulness. 'Bù fàng yì' (non-negligence) is declared the path to the deathless (amata, ambrosia), while negligence and heedlessness are the path to death and extinction. One who is heedful does not die; one who is heedless is as if already dead. The wise delight in dwelling in heedfulness and rejoice in the practice, for this is the domain of the noble ones (ariyā). This chapter establishes the foundational attitude required for all spiritual development.
