The Power of the Word
A comparison of the Logos in the Bible and mantra (眞言) in Buddhist scripture. Both traditions teach that words and sounds hold a sacred power to create and transform the world.
The Word That Creates
Bible
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Sutra
“Therefore the mantra of prajna paramita is proclaimed — the mantra is thus proclaimed: Gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā.”
The Sacredness of Speech
Bible
“And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light.”
Sutra
“Mantra is the secret of all Buddhas and the mother of all bodhisattvas. It is able to lead all sentient beings to swiftly attain the supreme unsurpassed enlightenment.”
The Fulfillment of the Word
Bible
“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
Sutra
“All the Buddhas and World-Honored Ones appear in the world for one great and significant reason alone: to lead sentient beings to open the wisdom and insight of the Buddha.”
