Truth

A comparison of Truth in the Bible and thusness (眞如, tathatā) in Buddhist scripture. We explore the nature of ultimate truth and its experience as described in both traditions.

What Is Truth?

Bible

Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'

Sutra

All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows; like dew and like lightning — so should one regard them.

Comparison

Christian truth is given through personal revelation — truth itself is incarnated in the specific historical event of Jesus Christ. Buddhist thusness is understood as the nature of reality just as it is, beyond language and concept, not as a specific person but as a nature pervading all phenomena. Both traditions emphasize that truth is not merely information or a proposition, and agree on the point that it holds the power to fundamentally transform one's way of life.

The Experience of Truth

Bible

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Sutra

Illuminating that the five aggregates are all empty, he crossed over all suffering and distress.

Comparison

John's 'the truth will set you free' and the Heart Sutra's 'illuminating the emptiness of the five aggregates and crossing over all suffering' run remarkably parallel. Both traditions teach that the experience of truth leads to liberation. In Christianity, liberation is freedom from the power of sin and death; in Buddhism, liberation is freedom from suffering arising from a mistaken perception of self. Knowing truth is itself already the beginning of salvation.

Truth and Freedom

Bible

Buy the truth and do not sell it — wisdom, instruction and insight as well.

Sutra

All dharmas from the very beginning have always been in the aspect of quiescence. When a child of the Buddha has practiced the path, in the future they will attain Buddhahood.

Comparison

The Proverbs' admonition 'buy the truth and do not sell it' and the Lotus Sutra's declaration 'all dharmas are always in the aspect of quiescence from the very beginning' present two attitudes toward truth. Proverbs emphasizes truth as a value to be pursued through life and preserved, while the Lotus Sutra reminds us that truth is already here from the beginning. Both traditions suggest that truth is not found by looking outside but by meeting it in the depths of life.
