The Way and the Path

A comparison of the Bible's Way and Buddhism's path (mārga). We explore together the beginning of the spiritual journey, the choices along the way, and the life lived on the path.

The Beginning of the Path

Bible

λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ὁδὸς καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια καὶ ἡ ζωή· οὐδεὶς ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸν πατέρα εἰ μὴ δι' ἐμοῦ.

Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'

Sutra

八正道中,最殊勝道,四諦之中,最為殊勝

Of all paths, the Noble Eightfold Path is the most excellent; of all truths, the Four Noble Truths are the most excellent.

Comparison

The Way of Christianity and the path (mārga) of Buddhism show a fundamental difference at the starting point of the spiritual journey. In Christianity, the way is Christ himself as a personal being, and the encounter with him is the beginning of the path. In Buddhism, the path is the concrete practical route of the Eightfold Path, and right understanding (right view) is the first step. Yet both traditions agree that 'entering the path' is the decisive turning point of spiritual life, and both call for a transformation from a life of wandering outside the path to a life of walking on it.

The Narrow Gate and the Middle Way

Bible

Εἰσέλθατε διὰ τῆς στενῆς πύλης· ὅτι πλατεῖα ἡ πύλη καὶ εὐρύχωρος ἡ ὁδὸς ἡ ἀπάγουσα εἰς τὴν ἀπώλειαν, καὶ πολλοί εἰσιν οἱ εἰσερχόμενοι δι' αὐτῆς· ὅτι στενὴ ἡ πύλη καὶ τεθλιμμένη ἡ ὁδὸς ἡ ἀπάγουσα εἰς τὴν ζωήν, καὶ ὀλίγοι εἰσὶν οἱ εὑρίσκοντες αὐτήν.

Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

Sutra

離於二邊,處於中道。不苦不樂,是為中道

Leaving behind the two extremes, abide in the Middle Way. Neither pain nor pleasure — this is the Middle Way.

Comparison

Jesus's 'narrow gate' and the Buddha's 'middle way' both warn against the temptation of the easy path, yet their approaches differ. The narrow gate demands a binary choice — selecting the narrow path (self-denial) rather than the wide path (worldly comfort) — while the middle way presents the wisdom of walking a balanced path between the two extremes of pleasure and asceticism. Yet both teachings agree that the true spiritual path is not what the masses easily choose, and that deep insight and deliberate choice are required.

The Journey on the Path

Bible

נֵר־לְרַגְלִי דְבָרֶךָ וְאוֹר לִנְתִיבָתִי׃

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Sutra

一切有為法,如夢幻泡影,如露亦如電,應作如是觀

All conditioned phenomena are like a dream, an illusion, a bubble, a shadow, like dew or a flash of lightning — thus should you contemplate them.

Comparison

The 'lamp to my feet' of Psalm 119 and the 'like a dream, illusion, bubble, shadow' of the Diamond Sutra both teach the attitude of a practitioner walking the path, yet the nature of the light differs. In the Psalm, one advances step by step relying on the external light of God's word; in the Diamond Sutra, one walks without attachment through the internal insight that penetrates the impermanence of all phenomena. Yet both traditions teach that the journey on the path is a continuous walk that does not end with a single decision, and that wakeful awareness — whether attentiveness to the word or contemplation of impermanence — is needed at every moment.
