Community and Sangha

Comparing the Bible's church (ekklesia) with Buddhism's sangha (僧伽, saṅgha). Exploring the meaning and role of communities gathered to share faith and practice.

Why We Gather Together

Bible

οὗ γάρ εἰσιν δύο ἢ τρεῖς συνηγμένοι εἰς τὸ ἐμὸν ὄνομα, ἐκεῖ εἰμι ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν

For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.

Sutra

自歸依佛,當願衆生,體解大道,發無上意。自歸依法,當願衆生,深入經藏,智慧如海。自歸依僧,當願衆生,統理大衆,一切無礙

I take refuge in the Buddha; may all sentient beings embody the great way and give rise to the highest intention. I take refuge in the Dharma; may all sentient beings enter deeply into the scriptural treasury, with wisdom vast as the ocean. I take refuge in the Sangha; may all sentient beings guide the great assembly with no obstruction whatsoever.

Comparison

The 'place gathered in my name' in Matthew and 'taking refuge in the Sangha' in the Three Refuges both illuminate why community is essentially necessary for the spiritual journey. In Christianity, the center of gathering is Christ's presence; in Buddhism, the Sangha's foundation is the Three Jewels. Both traditions teach that spiritual life is not a solitary endeavor — it deepens and becomes richer when shared with others walking the same path.

The Discipline of Community

ἦσαν δὲ προσκαρτεροῦντες τῇ διδαχῇ τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ τῇ κοινωνίᾳ, τῇ κλάσει τοῦ ἄρτου καὶ ταῖς προσευχαῖς

And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Sutra

身和同住,口和無諍,意和同悅,戒和同修,見和同解,利和同均

Harmony in body by living together (身和同住), harmony in speech without quarreling (口和無諍), harmony in mind by rejoicing together (意和同悅), harmony in precepts by practicing together (戒和同修), harmony in views by understanding together (見和同解), harmony in benefit by sharing equally (利和同均).

Comparison

The four pillars of the early church in Acts and the Six Harmonies of the Vinaya Pitaka both present specific disciplines for a community to remain healthy. The early church established order around teaching, fellowship, Eucharist, and prayer, while the Sangha pursued harmony across six dimensions: body, speech, mind, precepts, views, and material benefit. Both traditions show that community does not arise spontaneously but is something precious that must be cultivated through conscious discipline and practice.

Building One Another Up

Bible

Διὸ παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους καὶ οἰκοδομεῖτε εἷς τὸν ἕνα, καθὼς καὶ ποιεῖτε

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

Sutra

一切衆生而為樹根,諸佛菩薩而為華果,以大悲水饒益衆生,則能成就諸佛菩薩智慧華果

Taking all sentient beings as the roots of the tree and all Buddhas and bodhisattvas as the flowers and fruit: if one benefits sentient beings with the water of great compassion, one can thereby achieve the flowers and fruit of the wisdom of all Buddhas and bodhisattvas.

Comparison

'Building one another up' in 1 Thessalonians and 'benefiting sentient beings is achieving the wisdom of Buddhas' in the Avatamsaka Sutra both speak of community members becoming spiritual nourishment for one another's growth. In Christianity, each member builds up the other's faith to construct the body of Christ; in Buddhism, benefiting sentient beings is the root that causes the flower of enlightenment to bloom. Both traditions teach that spiritual growth is incomplete through individual effort alone — it reaches fullness only when we build one another up within community.
