요한계시록 Chapter 12

Translation: ESV

1

And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

Key Message

The woman clothed with the sun symbolizes the community of God's people who give birth to the Messiah; her glory comes from a divine source.

This woman is one of the greatest symbols in Revelation.

This woman is one of the greatest symbols in Revelation. The description of her 'clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and a crown of twelve stars' evokes Joseph's dream (Genesis 37:9–10). This woman simultaneously symbolizes the community of God's people — both Israel and the church — who give birth to the Messiah. The expression 'great sign (σημεῖον μέγα)' indicates that this vision is not a literal event but a profound theological symbol.

2

She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth.

Key Message

The coming of the Messiah is accomplished through the long suffering and waiting of God's people, and this pain is for the birth of new life.

The woman's birth pangs evoke the 'Zion in labor' imagery of Isaiah 26:17–18 and 66:7–8.

3

And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems.

Key Message

Satan operates behind all the powers of the world as an adversary, yet he is a limited being under God's sovereignty.

A 'great red dragon' appears as the second 'sign.

4

His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it.

Key Message

Satan has opposed the Messiah and His people from the beginning, but cannot prevent God's plan of salvation.

'Sweeping a third of the stars to the earth' hints that when Satan fell, a portion of the angels fell with him (Jude 6).

5

She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne,

Key Message

Despite all of Satan's opposition, Jesus Christ completed God's plan of salvation through His birth and ascension.

'The male child who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron' is the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy of Psalm 2:9, pointing to Jesus Christ.

6

and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days.

Key Message

Though the church flees into the wilderness amid persecution, it receives God's provision and protection even there.

The woman (the church) fleeing into the wilderness reflects the Exodus experience of Israel receiving God's protection in the wilderness.

7

Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back,

Key Message

Spiritual warfare in heaven is real, and God's army fights against Satan's army and prevails.

Spiritual warfare in heaven is described.

8

but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.

Key Message

Through Christ's redemptive work Satan has lost his accusatory standing in heaven, and this is the basis of the saints' victory.

The dragon (Satan) and his angels are defeated in battle and lose their place in heaven.

9

And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Key Message

Satan has deceived and opposed God's people from the beginning, but through Christ's victory he has been decisively defeated and cast down.

The dragon's identity is fully revealed: 'that ancient serpent' (the serpent of Eden in Genesis 3), 'the devil' (διάβολος, the slanderer/accuser), 'Satan' (σατανᾶς, the adversary), 'the deceiver of the whole world.

10

And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

Key Message

Through Christ's victory the Satan who accused the saints day and night has been cast out — this is the true proclamation of salvation.

Following Satan's expulsion a proclamation of salvation rings through heaven.

11

And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.

Key Message

The saints conquer Satan through Christ's blood, gospel testimony, and martyrial devotion — this is the method of true spiritual victory.

Three ways in which the saints conquer Satan are presented: first, 'the blood of the Lamb' (Christ's atonement); second, 'the word of their testimony' (proclaiming the gospel); third, 'they loved not their lives even unto death' (martyrial devotion).

12

Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!"

Key Message

Satan's fury arises because he knows his defeat is certain, and the saints must know the nature of this limited enemy and remain vigilant.

The contrasting situations of heaven and earth are presented.

13

And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.

Key Message

Behind the persecution of the church is the fury of the defeated Satan, and this paradoxically proves the church's victory.

Cast out of heaven, Satan takes out his fury on the church (the woman).

14

But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time.

Key Message

God protects the persecuted church on eagles' wings and nourishes it throughout the entire period of tribulation.

'The two wings of the great eagle' are images from Exodus 19:4 ('I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself') and Isaiah 40:31, symbolizing God's divine protection and carrying.

15

The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with a flood.

Key Message

Satan attempts to overwhelm the church with flood-like pressure, but God's protection prevents it.

The dragon pours water like a river from his mouth to swallow the woman.

16

But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river that the dragon had poured from his mouth.

Key Message

God protects His people even through all of creation, and Satan's attacks are stopped by unexpected means.

The earth opens its mouth and swallows the flood to help the woman.

17

Then the dragon became furious with the woman and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea.

Key Message

True Christians are those who keep God's commandments and bear testimony to Jesus — and they are Satan's primary targets of attack.

When the dragon fails to attack the woman (the church as community) he attacks 'the rest of her offspring,' that is, individual believers.
