시편 Chapter 63

Translation: ESV

1

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Key Message

True faith is a wholehearted longing for God as urgent as thirsting for water in a desert.

The physical thirst David experienced in the Judean wilderness runs parallel to his spiritual longing for God.

The physical thirst David experienced in the Judean wilderness runs parallel to his spiritual longing for God. The extreme thirst of the desert serves as the image for the soul's longing for God. 'My soul thirsts and my flesh faints' is an expression of wholehearted longing — the entire person, both soul and body, yearning for God.

2

So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory.

Key Message

The experience of God's presence in corporate worship becomes a spiritual resource that sustains the believer even in difficulty.

David recalls his past experience of God's presence in the sanctuary.

3

Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.

Key Message

God's love is more precious than life, and this recognition makes praise possible in any circumstance.

This verse is the theological climax of Psalm 63.

5

My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,

Key Message

Fellowship with God gives a deeper satisfaction of the soul than even the richest food.

In a situation of experiencing hunger in the wilderness, the paradoxical confession that experiencing God provides satisfaction like eating the richest food.

8

My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

Key Message

Faith is intimate union — clinging close to God — and God's right hand guards that relationship.

'Clings (davaq)' is the same word used in Genesis 2:24 to describe a man cleaving to his wife.
