민수기 Chapter 20

Translation: ESV

1

And the people of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh. And Miriam died there and was buried there.

Key Message

Even leaders ultimately die; God's history does not depend on any single person. When one generation of leaders passes, God raises up new leaders.

Chapter 20 contains events near the very end of the forty-year wilderness journey.

Chapter 20 contains events near the very end of the forty-year wilderness journey. The chapter begins with Miriam's death, signaling the close of a generation. Miriam was the sister of Moses and Aaron, one of Israel's first female prophets, and the leader who led the song of the Exodus. One generation of leadership is passing away as a new era approaches.

10

Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, "Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?"

Key Message

Even the most faithful leader must obey exactly in God's way; the mistake of attributing God's glory to oneself brings serious consequences.

Moses' fatal mistake is revealed in this verse.

12

And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them."

Key Message

A position of leadership demands a higher standard of obedience; even the most faithful servant must bear the consequences when departing from God's way.

Moses' sin is defined as 'not believing in God' and 'not upholding God as holy.

24

"Let Aaron be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land that I have given to the people of Israel, because you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.

Key Message

Death is a return to the community of one's ancestors; God glorifies the death of his servants. A limitation caused by a mistake does not cut off God's love.

Aaron too, as a result of the Meribah incident, is not permitted to set foot in the promised land.

28

And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar his son. And Aaron died there on the top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

Key Message

God's ministry does not end with an individual's death; ministry is transmitted to the next generation and continues. The succession of the priesthood ensures the continuity of God's ministry.

The scene of the high priestly garments being formally transferred to his son Eleazar symbolizes the succession of the priesthood.
