민수기 Chapter 2

Translation: ESV

1

The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

Key Message

God gives specific instructions for the orderly life of his people.

Chapter 2 begins with God's command concerning the arrangement of Israel's camp.

Chapter 2 begins with God's command concerning the arrangement of Israel's camp. The fact that God speaks to both Moses and Aaron simultaneously shows that the commands of this chapter concern both civil and religious authority. Following the census (chapter 1), the camp arrangement (chapter 2) teaches that the Israelite community must stand before God in an orderly manner.

2

"The people of Israel shall camp each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers' houses. They shall camp facing the tent of meeting on every side.

Key Message

All of Israel's life must be organized around the presence of God; the camp arrangement centered on the tabernacle is the spatial expression of this theological principle.

The core principle of Israel's camp is contained in this verse.

3

Those to camp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the standard of the camp of Judah by their companies, the chief of the people of Judah being Nahshon the son of Amminadab,

Key Message

Judah's placement on the east reflects God's prophetic providence that a messianic king would come from that tribe.

The tribe of Judah is assigned the first position, leading on the east side.

17

Then the tent of meeting shall set out, with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps; as they camp, so they shall set out, each in his place, standard by standard.

Key Message

Even in Israel's march, God's presence (the tabernacle) occupies the central place; in every movement of our lives, God must be at the center.

Even when Israel is on the march, the tabernacle and the Levites remain in the center of the formation.

34

Thus did the people of Israel. According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they camped by their standards, and so they set out, each one in his clan, according to his fathers' house.

Key Message

Obedience to God's commands is the basis of community order and harmony; the ideal life of Israel is to act according to God's word.

The final verse of chapter 2 ends with a declaration of obedience: Israel did 'according to all that the LORD commanded.
