요한복음 Chapter 20

Translation: ESV

1

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

Key Message

The one who sought Jesus in love even in darkness and despair became the first witness of the resurrection.

'While it was still dark' is both physical darkness and an allusion to Mary Magdalene's state of despair.

'While it was still dark' is both physical darkness and an allusion to Mary Magdalene's state of despair. Yet she went to the tomb in spite of the darkness. Love was stronger than fear. Upon seeing 'that the stone had been taken away,' she initially misunderstands that the tomb has been disturbed (v. 2). The thought of resurrection was not yet in her mind.

16

Jesus said to her, 'Mary.' She turned and said to him in Aramaic, 'Rabboni!' (which means Teacher).

Key Message

The risen Jesus restores relationship by calling her by name; the good shepherd knows his sheep by name.

This scene is one of the most moving moments in the Gospel of John.

19

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you.'

Key Message

The risen Jesus passes even through doors locked by fear to come to the disciples and grants them peace as a gift.

'The doors being locked .

27

Then he said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.'

Key Message

Jesus does not give up on the doubter but comes to find him; faith is, beyond evidence, a volitional decision.

Thomas, even after hearing the other disciples' testimony of the resurrection, had said 'Unless I see .

28

Thomas answered him, 'My Lord and my God!'

Key Message

Thomas' journey from doubt to the complete confession 'my Lord and my God' shows what the journey of faith looks like.

Thomas' confession is the most complete confession of Christ in the Gospel of John.

29

Jesus said to him, 'Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'

Key Message

The declaration that faith without seeing is more blessed is Jesus' pronouncement of blessing for all believers today.

These words are directed to the readers of the Gospel of John — all generations of believers who have not seen Jesus in person.

31

but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Key Message

Everything in the Gospel of John was written for the purpose of causing readers to believe in Jesus as the Christ and thereby obtain eternal life.

The purpose of writing the Gospel of John is stated.
