요한복음 Chapter 16

Translation: ESV

7

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

Key Message

Jesus' departure is the necessary condition for the coming of the Spirit, and through the Spirit Jesus' presence is extended to the whole world.

This is the astonishing declaration that Jesus' departure is 'advantageous' to the disciples.

This is the astonishing declaration that Jesus' departure is 'advantageous' to the disciples. In order for the Spirit, going beyond Jesus' physical limitations (being in one place only), to come to all believers everywhere, Jesus had to go first. 'I will send him' shows that the Spirit's sending is a continuation of Jesus' ministry. The Spirit is the one who extends Christ's presence universally.

8

And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:

Key Message

The Spirit exposes to the world the sin of not believing in Jesus, the righteousness of Jesus, and the judgment of Satan.

Three aspects of the Spirit's ministry toward the world are presented.

13

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

Key Message

The Spirit of truth does not newly create the truth of Christ but guides believers to fully understand and live out that truth.

The Spirit's revelatory ministry is declared.

20

Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

Key Message

The grief of the cross is transformed into the joy of the resurrection; this is the central paradox of the Christian faith.

The suffering of the cross and the joy of the resurrection are prophesied.

33

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

Key Message

Tribulation in the world is unavoidable, but peace and courage are possible in Christ, who has already overcome the world.

This is the conclusion of chapter 16 (and of chapters 13–16 as a whole).
