이사야 Chapter 61

Translation: ESV

1

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

Key Message

The Messiah comes anointed with the Spirit to restore the poor and brokenhearted.

This is one of the most famous verses in Isaiah.

This is one of the most famous verses in Isaiah. Jesus read this passage in the synagogue at Nazareth and declared: 'Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing' (Luke 4:21). The ministry of the Anointed One (Messiah) is proclaimed.

2

to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;

Key Message

Jesus' first coming opened the age of grace; judgment comes at his second coming.

'The year of the LORD's favor'—the image of the Jubilee.

3

to grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

Key Message

God transforms our mourning into joy, our ashes into a beautiful headdress.

Three exchanges take place: (1) a beautiful headdress instead of ashes; (2) the oil of gladness instead of mourning; (3) the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit.

10

I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Key Message

God clothes us with garments of salvation and righteousness.

The joy of salvation is expressed as the joy of a wedding.
