이사야 Chapter 50

Translation: ESV

4

The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

Key Message

The performance of a mission begins with daily morning listening to God's word.

This is the opening of the third Servant Song (50:4-9).

This is the opening of the third Servant Song (50:4-9). The servant receives God's word morning by morning. 'The tongue of those who are taught'—the language of the learned, the ability to speak words of comfort. The servant's ministry begins with hearing the word.

5

The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward.

Key Message

The servant's core virtue is complete obedience.

Because God opened his ear, the servant obeys.

6

I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.

Key Message

God's servant does not flee suffering but accepts it.

The description of the suffering the servant receives: being struck on the back, having the beard pulled out, spitting, disgrace.

7

But the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.

Key Message

One who is certain of God's help can set his face like flint before suffering.

Even in suffering, the servant is not disgraced.

10

Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.

Key Message

Trusting in God's name even in darkness is genuine faith.

This is an invitation to respond to the Servant Song.
